Insight PDP's Umo Eno wins Akwa Ibom governorship election

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria's South-South region, Pastor Umo Eno, has won the March 18 governorship election.

Announcing the results of the election in Uyo on Sunday, the returning officer and Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian Maritime University, Prof. Emmanuel Adigio, said Eno won with 354,348 votes, beating his closet rival and candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Bassey Akpan, who got 136,262 votes.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Obon Akan Udofia, came third with 129,602 votes. Eno won in 29 out of 31 local government areas, according to the returning officer.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate, Akpanudoedehe John James, scored 12,509 while Uduakobong Oeter Udoh of the Labour Party scored 4,746 votes.

Eno is the preferred candidate of the outgoing Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Emmanuel Udom. 

He is a former commissioner for lands in Akwa Ibom and will succeed Emmanuel on May 29, 2023.
