The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the winner of the Saturday’s 2023 presidential election.

According to the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who was the returning officer at the presidential election, Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to beat 17 other candidates who participated in the election.

He was trailed by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, who received 6,984,520 votes.

Behind Abubakar is the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, who polled 6,101,533 votes.

The candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, came a distant fourth with 1,496,687 votes.

Each of the three candidates won 12 states – an indication of how much divided the country has become.

Tinubu won states such as Benue, Ekiti, Rivers, Borno, Jigawa, Zamfara, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Oyo and Ogun states.

Atiku won in Katsina, Kebbi, Osun, Sokoto, Kaduna, Gombe, Yobe, Bauchi, Adamawa and Taraba, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa.

Mr Obi won in Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, Edo, Cross River, Delta, Lagos, Plateau, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Abia, and Enugu states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Kwankwaso won in Kano State.

The results of the election, however, are contested by other parties due to INEC’s breach of its own guidelines, one of which was the real-time upload of the field results on the IReV portal.
